May Goals

On to May.

I have a lot of goals for May, my main two being the upstairs of my house and the next insurance exam.  The story of my life.  But of course I have sewing goals.

I have 4 that will be done done this month.  Considering I am aiming for completing 12 UFO’s this year and I already have 4 done, this will double my total quickly.  It should also put me at about 46 yards for the 100 dash from stash, which is right about where I should be.  I wanted 2 more UFO finishes by the 4th of July and now I will have at least 4.

Easy Street
X’s and O’s blue boy
Blue D9P
Pink Boxy Stars

Other goals:

Thimbles BOM – finish top to flimsy stage; the back will be a Sister’s Choice flimsy.
Sister’s Choice – will use the Thimbles BOM to figure out how many Sister’s choice blocks I need.  For May, make all 9 patches, which I think is 49, last time I checked my math.
Orca Bay – the last seam is giving me fits.  Don’t even ask.  I would like this to the binding stage.
Bricks & Stepping Stones – finish the blocks.  This is harder than it seems.
Beau’s – make the center, which is the huge 25-patch, the coping border, the inner box (with the column units), the next coping border and the first round of Mellie’s quilt blocks around the outside. Also make more 9 patches and HST’s as needed.

Homework – I am woefully behind in homework, so I will try to ease back into it.  Since I have so many 9 patches to make, those will be my leader-enders for a while.

LCRR blocks – done and mailed in May.
Just Takes 2 (JT2) – There are 4 Tuesdays in May which normally would mean 8 blocks, so let’s aim for 12.  We get as far as we go.

BOMs – I have 5 that I do.  3 are caught up. 1 is one month behind and the other is not so hot.  The goal for May is the get the first 4 caught up and maintained and do one third of the work on the one I am behind.

I am away from home 8 weeknights this upcoming month, plus one night is our anniversary, so we hope to do something fun.  I should be able to block and tackle this list pretty well if I am diligent.

April Update

Y’know, April has not turned out sewing-wise so far as I had hoped!

It’s OK.  I had another insurance exam and I will continue to have them in even-numbered months.  So I guess that helps me set expectations until I’m done with them.  I also have the urgent to deep clean again and really declutter.  What I have learned that if I leave the machine I quilt on set up on my kitchen table with quilts ready to be quilted, I alternate 15 minutes of cleaning with 15 of sewing and I get a lot done.  That is how I got through studying for this last exam and now Easy Street is done being quilted.  So I am just going to go on a quilting jag for a while and not worry about piecing except for BOMs where I have to show them my progress.  Don’t worry; in the heat of the summer I will be in my basement piecing non-stop.

So yeah.  I’ll do what I can.  Only one thing got done on my list and that is the Blue Boxy Stars.  It’s done done.

What did get done:

Easy Street – binding is attached.
X’s and O’s blue boy – binding is attached.

Not on the list:

Blue D9P – binding is attached.  When found, this one was just a flimsy.
Pink Boxy Stars – under the quilting needle.  When found, this one was just a flimsy.

And the deep cleaning has begun.

April Goals

On to Q2!  I have high hopes for Q2 in lots of areas of my life and so sewing may take a back seat.  If I can get to the 4th of July with 2 more UFO finishes I will be pleased.  But of course I want more than that!

Quilts to be done done:

Bricks & Stepping Stones – for a wedding gift.
Sunrise Point
X’s and O’s blue boy
Blue Boxy Stars
BOM jacket – I have a completed BOM that I think would make a lovely jacket.  I want to wear it for a conference on April 18, so I best get cracking!

Projects to work on:

Thimbles BOM -  finish top without borders.  I am making this reversible with a Sister’s Choice.
Sister’s Choice – I can finally start new things!  I will use the Thimbles BOM to figure out how many Sister’s choice blocks I need.  For April, make all 9 patches.
Orca Bay – quilt this.
Beau’s – make the center, which is the huge 25-patch, the coping border, the inner box (with the column units), the next coping border and the first round of Mellie’s quilt blocks around the outside.

Homework.  Since the strings blocks are all done, there’s some shifting here.  That’s fine; keeps me interested.

5 LCRR blocks – I did nothing on these and so I have 15 to do.  Finish and mail these.
Just Takes 2 (JT2) – To complete April’s pdf’s, I would have also assembled one quadrant of the quilt, but not be as far block-wise.  We shall see if I also get through block 36.
Color Challenge Sampler – moving this to BOM status, because that is what it is.
Yellow Log Cabin / LCRR – Frogging 4 blocks would be good.
Batik Weed Whacker – Part of the Pay It Forward (PIF) challenge.  Blocks are started; I just want it done.  This month, all the blocks.
Hopscotch – complete the top.

BOMs – These I’m caught up on. Easy to maintain.

And I need 2 wall hangings for an event on April 21.

Now of course, that I see the list I’ve made for myself, I am indeed nutso.  I’d be lucky to complete this by the end of June, much less the end of April.  But a girl can dream!

March Wrap-Up

So March is at an end and so is Lent.  I’ll get back to my Lenten challenge in another post, so for this post, I’ll talk about me and my March goals.

The following were quilted and bound:

Easy Street Mini
Easter Carrie Nation
Easter Carrie Nation Mini
String Blocks (down in the homework section)

Here’s the status on these 3 that didn’t make it.  At the beginning of March, Ted decided that he wanted to build his 5,000 piece Tower of London Lego set.  I really didn’t mind, and he and Renee each did a tower and they did it together.  However, such a set takes over the kitchen table.  So besides having nowhere to eat for about 3 weeks, I also had nowhere to quilt either.  I tried to quilt using my little Janome Jem, but sadly the large needle broke off and fell into the machine.  IT fell to the floor so its sews just fine, but now I am leery of trying that little adventure again.  So these 2 are exactly as they were on February 28: sandwiched and waiting patiently.

Easy Street
X’s and O’s Blue Boy quilt (unearthed while cleaning)

However on Easter I was able to get some quilting in, so Blue Boxy Stars is almost completed with its quilting.

I also had 2 quilts in progress.  Orca Bay has its rows put together and only needs a coping border and the pieced border to go.  Whoo hoo – this was a long one!  Beau’s quilt had the goal of having the columns done.  I’ve changed the design once again and I plan to use the column units in a different way, but I did indeed make all the column units I could with the parts that I had from the swap.  I call these two projects successful for March.

Then there’s the homework.  This I was more than 50% successful with.

5 LCRR blocks – I did nothing on these and so I have 15 to do.
Just Takes 2 (JT2) – I am caught up through March’s pdf’s.  This was no small task.
String Blocks – This was FINISHED!  Done done!
Color Challenge Sampler – Completed February and March so I am up to date.
Yellow Log Cabin / LCRR – Oh, I did nothing at all.

BOMs – These I’m caught up on. Easy to maintain.

Yarn efforts – I made progress on all 3 projects.  I see the finish line approaching for all 3 of them, so that helps.

And I didn’t need the table runner, so I didn’t make it.

So overall, I had 4 finishes, 3 of which were UFOs.  I also had a UFO finish in January, so I am ahead of the pace by 1 UFO, if I am aiming for 1 per month.  This is a good thing.

Reorganization

The idea of making better sense of my sewing area has been on my mind for quite some time.  As of late, like the past year, I have been a little more free and loose in my purchasing.  I have been, in part, because I have no more daycare payments and for the time being I have no car payments.  While orthodontist payments have started, they pale in comparison to daycare and the cars are hanging in there.  But I want to curb my purchasing just because I can.

I’ve struggled with what frustrates me the most in my area.  I have each color of fabric in its own milk crate under the table; some colors share a milk crate.  Each color also has a ziploc in the crate for small pieces.  This works super-well.  So well, I’ve bought more milk crates!  So this I want to keep.

I have made a fair amount of scrappy quilts, both of the controlled and kitchen-sink varieties.  So the milk crates are getting low on inventory.  And recently, I’ve had to, gasp, buy backs.  So I think I need to start by refilling my milk crates with what I’ve got in the purple Rubbermaid bins in the closet.

Meanwhile, as projects have finished, I’ve just shoved their scraps in ziploc bags.  I now have at least 20 of those.  These are making me nuts; they are everywhere.

So step 1 of the grand reorganization is to pull out the milk crates and color bags and replenish.  The first part will be to go through the scrap bags and interfile all those colors back where they belong.  Anything that reads multi-color, belongs to a holiday, batik or Civil War will go somewhere else.  The second part will be to go through the bins and put larger pieces / yardage in the bottoms of the milk crates.  When the milk crates are returned to their home under the table, I will have quite the palette to work from, and that excites me.

I also can say that I will eventually go through the milk crates and the color bags and cut stuff up using my Baby Go.  Cut the value die, cut 2 inch squares, cut some drunkard’s path, cut some strips.  I only have 4 dies and that is more than enough for right now.

The other thing that came up recently is that Judy over at Patchwork Times is hosting a UFO parade in 2 weeks.  This is like a Bring Out Your Dead exercise to me, but when I go through the sewing area to reorganize, I might as well.  Many of those bins have fabric and UFOs in them.  There’s no hiding it.

So I will go through this exercise as well.  This UFO list will be separate from the one I work from now.  I like having about 30 to choose from right now; that’s more than enough variety to keep me busy.  But the 100+ that will end up on this list both scares me and excites me.  I guess that is good that my UFOs still excite me.  So I will try and be positive.

One thing I will not tackle is culling the books and magazines.  I will organize the shelf and dust it but not go through it.  That would be too much right now.

Quickly...and a finish

I did get a finish.  This is a table topper version of a Dorothy Young mystery that I did sometime after Spring 2003 and before Spring 2007, because I know I made the top while living in the house on Cleveland.  Dorothy offers these mystery quilts at Christmas, and I was dealing that Christmas with a small child and the demands of delivering her, in wonderful spirits at all times, to every relative that wanted to see her.  Not fair to her or me (or Ted, lest we forget him).  So after she went down that night, I took this out and made it.  I remember there was a James Bond movie marathon on TV as well to keep me company.  I thought it quite poignant to make an Easter quilt on Christmas.  The large one is halfway bound; it should be done this weekend.

The 6 little things are coasters made from the scraps.  All told, this used 2.60 yards and these of course are mine.

Nothing else really has happened.  I hope to get a lot done between now and Easter night.  Goals include quilting a blue quilt, finishing quilting a blue quilt, getting binding attached to both of those, finishing the big Easter quilt, finishing the Orca Bay top and getting caught up with homework.  Next week is Renee’s spring break and so there is a halt to all things GS.  I get a huge break.  I of course will continue to work on GS things, but I will not have to attend meetings, etc.  The idea of being home each night is lovely.  The 10 Commandments is on TV on the 30th and even though I have it on DVD, I will watch it on TV.  It is our tradition.  I hope to get to sit and handsew bindings through the whole thing!

It’s good to have goals.

QAYG Strings

Well, here it is.  This is the Quilt As You Go Strings quilt.  I said I had some insights.  Boy do I.

First of all, the block sizes are too large.  These are 12 inch blocks, meaning the center strings had to be over 18 inches long.  I don't have many strings in that length.  The next go around they will be smaller.  I am thinking to have some ready in 10, 8 and even 6 inch sizes.

Secondly, the QAYG method is wonderful.  I like the idea that when the block is stitched, it's done.  It uses up odd batting, weird backs and the like. That's a win.  Again, I will prep several in several sizes.

I also realize I am OK with piecing string blocks onto newsprint but never onto a fabric foundation.  Don't ask; I don't know either.

Thirdly, I am OK with the random colors of this, but I do favor string blocks in all one color.  Bonnie Hunter has so many patterns in string fling that work this way.

Lastly, I can tell I need to work on my joining process.  I do the type where there's a 1 inch strip on the back and a 1.5 inch strip folded over on the top.  Join two blocks together on the back and topstitch on the front.  This is the third quilt I have done it on.  I certainly have room for improvement.

This quilt used 7.40 yards of fabric and measured 71 inches square.  It has not yet revealed its owner to me.

What I have thought about as I discerned these revelations is that I need to sort my scraps.  I am devising a plan for that.  It will take away from sewing time but add to creative time.  Stay tuned.

International Quilting Day Update

I did finish a new project – the Easy Street mini.  It used up .76 yards.  Yes, I now know that my 4 sitting turkeys should be orange with red wings and not the other way around.  But hey, it’s done and I like it.  Here’s a picture of it on my cube wall.

I am continuing to bind while watching Last Resort.  I am through 7 of the 13 episodes.  It is very good and I am sad it only had one season.  I don’t think it could have gone on for 7 seasons, but maybe 2.

This weekend is very busy.  We went north today for a few things, so I bound another quilt in the car.  The strings quilt, which was homework, had actually progressed so far as to be ready to be hand sewn for its binding.  I am excited to be done with this one.  More insight into this project when I post the finish.  I need to snap a pic of it first.

In basketball news, my undergrad alma mater North Central College has advanced to the Elite Eight in D3 Hoops.  We are overjoyed!  D3 doesn't get a lot of press, but it's where athletes are academics too.  On the high school front, Jarabi Parker (who is considered the best player in high school ball in the nation) is currently leading his team to the 4A championship.  Parker plays for Simeon.  To give you an idea, Derrick Rose of the Bulls played for Simeon.  And tomorrow they announce the brackets.  (That I do not follow as closely.)

Why the focus on basketball?  Did you know that the Illinois High School Association trademarked the term March Madness long before the NCAA?  Now, they co-own it.  We love March Madness in central IL.

Goals for the week

This will get me through to Friday 03/15 and maybe Sunday.

Finish string blocks quilt to the point of attaching the binding
Feb color challenge blocks - purple
Mar color challenge blocks - orange
JT2 - 11-16
1 section Orca Bay and attach it to another completed section - top half done

We need to drive to Chicago on Saturday, so I hope to use the strings quilt as the car binding task.

Bonus items - 25-patch center for Beau's completed and 20 logs on the LCRR blocks.

March - 1/3 Through

I've had a good couple of quilting days.  Just sayin'.  Anyway here's how March looks as we are about 1/3 of the way in.  Lord knows weather-wise it has come in like a lion.

The binding is attached on both Easter items.  I have tivo'd all of Last Resort and so I am only binding when I watch that show.  I'm trying to watch one episode per day, so slowly I am getting through all the binding.  The show is very good, but alas it has been cancelled.  When it's done, I have Arrow up next in the tivo for binding purposes.

I have been 100% unable to quilt because I quilt at my kitchen table, and right now, my kitchen table is covered in the nearly 5,000 Legos that make up the London Tower Bridge set.  I am not making this up. We are eating eclectically, since we have no table per se.  Quilting will just have to wait.  So no progress on the Blue Boxy Stars, Easy Street or finishing the baby boy blue quilt.

I also have done a fair amount of homework.  I did everything that I wanted to with the Strings quilt.  The April homework is to join the 3 sections together and bind.  I am trying to do this while I have the quilt out.  I most likely will not bind it until April, but to have it in the binding pile will be nice.  OK, maybe that's not a lot of homework, but I am pleased.

I did spend a lot of time fiddling around with the parts for Beau's quilt.  Here's a pic of what the outer border will look like.  I will need to make some additional units, but that's OK.

Before you ask, over 12 feet.  I'm not sure how this will end up, but here's the border!  This was seriously the only place I could find with enough clear real estate to lay it out.

And I did my BOM blocks for the First Saturday project, so I am ready for April.  All done!

I did finish a knitting project, but I have to weave in the ends, block it, etc.  But I'm close.  Both crochet projects are moving along as well.

I have struggled with the idea of not starting anything new.  This has been a lot harder than I thought.  But it is proving to be a good exercise in discipline.

In other news, my college alma maters are both doing well at men's basketball.  This is a lot of fun to follow.

March Goals

As I mentioned in my February wrap-up post, I’ve been sandwiching.  Right now I have 6 items ready to quilt and finish, and they total over 32 yards, which is short of my Lenten goal, but still really darn good.  (As an aside, I’m doing well on the crochet and knitting goals as well for Lent.) I also want to average about 1.5 UFOs finished per month and right now I have 1, so by the end of March I need another 3.5.  Well 4 of the 6 are UFOs, so that helps too!

So without further fuss, here are March’s goals:

Quilt and Bind (done done):

Easy Street
Easy Street Mini
Easter Carrie Nation
Easter Carrie Nation Mini
Blue Boxy Stars
X’s and O’s Blue Boy quilt (unearthed while cleaning)

Projects:

Orca Bay – Progress.  I would like the top done.

Beau’s – The first part of the top requires making what I am calling the columns.  I would like the columns made.

Homework – Since none got done last month, I will keep current as best I can.  I will double up or divide between March and April as works best for each assignment.

5 LCRR blocks – I never finished a set for a swapper and she still has one of my sets.  There are 20 blocks total, so I am doing 5 per month.
Just Takes 2 (JT2) – I diligently saved all the downloads last year for me to make them this year.  My colors are unbleached muslin and pink.  Since by the end of April there needs to be another 26 blocks made, I will do 11-23 in March.
String Blocks – Many of these were done as homework last year.  Since the quilt will be 30 blocks, I am taking a third of what is made, making enough more to get to 10 blocks, and joining them together into two rows, as the blocks are QAYG.  I will do 2 months’ worth this month.
Color Challenge Sampler – This is actually 2 challenges in one.  One is a color challenge and another is a monthly free sampler off of someone’s blog.  I’m combining the two.  No clue at this writing on the February color.  Or the March color or block.  I will do both this month.
Yellow Log Cabin / LCRR – Completely undo one row and start sewing the top together.  I will do what I can in light of the rest of the stuff.

BOMs – These I’m caught up on. Easy to maintain.

Also I need to finish 2 crochet things and 1 knit thing.  These are moving along as I would hope.

And I need a table runner for a gift basket.  Since this is a donation, I do not feel bad about starting this new thing during Lent.

February Report

First things first, I passed my insurance exam.  2 down, 3 to go.  Then it’s time for a new sewing machine!

February was the non-sewing month.  I didn’t get a darned thing done.  Not one finish!  Between the insurance exam, Girl Scouts and cookies, DD’s birthday and life in general, it just didn’t happen.  I was hit by migraines twice that were so bad I got sick and had to take off work.

The last few days / week, I’ve been working on sandwiching quilts.  So here’s the status of stuff.

Easy Street – Done done.
Actually the top is done and it’s sandwiched.

Orca Bay – Progress.  I will be happy if it is sandwiched and somewhere in the quilting process.
Not too much progress and that’s OK.

Blue Boxy Stars – Done done.  This was in January’s homework pile; I’ve budgeted 2 months for this one, so now it’s time to finish it!
Sandwiched.

Beau’s – Started.  Nancy, Near Philadelphia hosted two lovely swaps, a quilt for Miss Melanie and Ashley’s quilt.  If you know anything about Gone With the Wind, you can see where I got the name Beau’s quilt.  I hope to combine all these blocks, pieces and parts together into a very large quilt for my king sized bed that holds two pretty fluffy people!  Any start on this will make my day!
Got an idea!

Homework – none of that got done.

Since there are 4 Tuesdays in February, I will do 11-18.
String Blocks – Many of these were done as homework last year.  Since the quilt will be 30 blocks, I am taking a third of what is made, making enough more to get to 10 blocks, and joining them together into two rows, as the blocks are QAYG.
Color Challenge Sampler – This is actually 2 challenges in one.  One is a color challenge and another is a monthly free sampler off of someone’s blog.  I’m combining the two.  No clue at this writing on the February color.
Yellow Log Cabin / LCRR – Completely undo one row and start sewing the top together.

BOMs – These I’m caught up on.

Feb at the 2/3 Point

So now we are at the 2/3 point for February and this month has been abysmal.  I mean, I haven’t sewn a stitch it feels like.  I have done a lot of crochet.

Tomorrow I have an insurance exam.  Here’s hoping I pass.  Let’s say I do for the sake of conversation.  That give me 8 solid days of quilty time.  I have got to get a lot done in that time.  I have pulled out the Easter Carrie Nation top that is done so I can get that prepared for quilting as well.  The Blue Boxy Starts top is pinned together and I have done some sewing on it.  I found a mistake with a 4 patch in Easy Street.  You can see how this has been going.

So bring on Storm Q and may we get a snow day on Friday.  That would be the awesome.

Big Birthday Bash plans

OK, at noon today we start the big Renee birthday festivities, which run through Tuesday night, due to 2 days off by the school district.  Here are my quilty goals during that time.

Have blue boxy stars sandwiched
Have Easy Street sandwiched
Trim all Beau’s HSTs – they were deliberately made oversized in the swap
Prep blue column for Beau’s quilt as a leader-ender project
Lots of knitting and crochet
Ripping the yellow LCRR

I want to get more done and I haven’t sewn very much this month so far.  I have an insurance exam coming up next week and once that is done I can sew with abandon!

Lenten Challenge

This week was Ash Wednesday, and while I am not as close to my faith as I once was, I am going to take up / give up something for Lent.  I am only going to work on projects that have already been started. I will not start anything new.  I admit I got this from another quilter, but I think it is a good one.  Let’s see how much I can accomplish.

I did start a new project on Tuesday, a crocheted baby afghan.  I have several people who are expecting either children or grandchildren in my life so I am trying to get ahead.  The afghan I started is just going to be one really big granny square in a beautiful pastel ombre-blend color.  5 rounds of granny, one round of hdc, lather, rinse, repeat.  It’s good to work on before bedtime while watching 15-20 minutes of recorded TV.

Maybe, just maybe, I will be able to bust 40 yards during the 40 days, finish 2 crochet things and 1 knit thing.  That would be a lot and it would be awesome.  Stay tuned.

Feb at the 1/3 mark

Yeah, it’s been a less than stellar start to the month.  The month started on a Friday, which was fine, but the Saturday and Sunday were not spent in central IL, so those were non-quilty days.  Monday was a crazy afternoon and evening involving a 65 miles roundtrip to the LQS for my BOM blocks, GS cookies and a GS meeting.

Tuesday brought a migraine that did not quit until Thursday late afternoon.  Not much of anything happened.  Thursday night I went to a local school and helped a bunch of little Girl Scouts sew for a service project.  And now we are up to today, which is the 8th.

My goal for this weekend, besides yet even more Girl Scout stuff (sensing a theme?), is to clean my house / basement and sew.  I want to accomplish a few things, but I’m not sure which things so here’s a stab at the list.

Finish all blue boxy stars blocks
Make blue boxy stars top
Sandwich blue boxy stars
Color Challenge Sampler – this month’s color is purple and the block is a Jacob’s ladder.  Since it’s only 2 blocks, that will be do-able.
Ripping on the yellow LCRR

Then for next week during the work week, I hope to quilt on the boxy stars a bit each day, and then work on things in block-quantity order.  So next up would be a 3 block BOM, then the 5 LCRR blocks, then the 8 JT2 blocks, and lastly the 10 string blocks.  I should be able to keep chipping away at Orca Bay as a leader-ender during all of this.  I won’t get all of it done, but at least there is a plan, and after a day at work, that’s what I need.  I know I will have 2 nights away next week, so if I get to the JT2 part, I will be pleased.

I also figured out a plan for Beau’s quilt.  There are HSTs and 4 patches from the Ashley quilt that I will set on point.  The 4 patches will be on point in a long column, with the 4 patches filling in the spots.  The even out the edges on each column, I will use the plethora of 6.5” squares I have from Miss Mellie’s quilt.  Imagine making a Jacob’s ladder block, setting it on point and then trimming it off.  I hope to have a blue column, a brown column and a mixed column.  We shall see what we have.  I am excited, that is for sure.  My goal this week is to sort things into piles and lay them out to confirm I like it.

I'm posting this on Sunday evening.  My weekend has not been as productive as planned from a quilting point of view, but I am OK with that.  I have an insurance exam in 10 days ans I am on pace with my studies.  Tonight I hope to watch the 2 hour Downton Abbey and sort through some of the Beau's blocks and maybe do some hand work.

February Goals

And here are the February goals.  Of course I am ambitious!

Easy Street – Done done.

Orca Bay – Progress.  I will be happy if it is sandwiched and somewhere in the quilting process.

Blue Boxy Stars – Done done.  This was in January’s homework pile; I've budgeted 2 months for this one, so now it’s time to finish it!

Yellow Log Cabin / LCRR – Completely undo one row and start sewing the top together.

BOMs

Yes I do BOMs too.  I like free ones or the ones where it’s bring your block at the appointed time and get your next block free.

So, yeah, 2 finishes.  When I need to quilt large quilts, I take over the large kitchen table for quilting and I put up a large table in the living room to hold the quilts when they are not being quilted.  It kinda takes over the first floor.  So when I do it, I try to get a lot done.  I did this over Christmas and got 4 quilts done, so it’s worth it when I do it.  I love my very understanding family!
